Granor offers on-site dining, intended to broaden people’s understanding of organic farming, its growing practices, and the food it produces. As these grew in popularity, the team began bottling spirits to be used as part of the tasting experience, and sold in the farm store. With increased demand and new products in the pipeline, it became clear that the labelling being used lacked a unified structure, making the range feel fragmented.
An identity for Granor Spirits was needed to create a connection across product categories, while allowing the distinct character of each spirit to still shine through. We approached this challenge as we would building a brand – beginning with a comprehensive strategy, before developing a flexible and future-proof design system. Ensuring that this felt in harmony with the farm’s existing visual world, while also considering the practicalities of production across multiple bottle forms.
An identity for Granor Spirits was needed to create a connection across product categories, while allowing the distinct character of each spirit to still shine through.
We began work on this project by spending time with the Granor team getting to understand the farm’s distilling processes, the agricultural story behind each spirit, and the existing labelling and production systems. We also mapped out all regulatory requirements for the labelling including, ABV variation, bottling data, and barrel information, to ensure these were considered as an integral part of the design from the very start.
Rather than completely replace everything that existed, we analysed the design language already in use to identify common connections which could be built upon and made stronger. Typography was retained as a key feature to create a sense of craft, elegance, and a premium feel, while flexing in style to capture the essence of each spirit. An overall clean and minimal approach to the design of the labels was injected with warmth and personality through more expressive touches of colour, texture, and illustration.
Rather than completely replace everything that existed, we analysed the design language already in use to identify common connections which could be built upon and made stronger.
The new labelling system successfully balances the organic heritage of Granor Farm with the contemporary simplicity of a premium spirits brand.
The Bushel & Hopper Whiskey ranges make use of refined serif typography to create clarity and clear hierarchy, with space for handwritten barrel numbers, bottling dates and ABV to support Granor’s approach to small-batch production. A modern grain illustration is used as a subtle background finishing effect.
Granor Dry Gin takes a bolder approach characteristic of its clean, crisp taste – with a fresh contrasting white, blue and red colour palette and contemporary illustration style.
The Vermouth labelling is inspired by the art of vintage liquor posters, paying homage to the past of this traditional spirit, brought up-to-date in an expressive, abstract way using colours linked to the crops from which the product is made.
Together, the labels create a collection which feels considered and connected, while each spirit retains its own story and unique character.
The new labelling system successfully balances the organic heritage of Granor Farm with the contemporary simplicity of a premium spirits brand.
The design framework we have set in place, has established a foundation for the Granor Spirits brand that will allow the range to continue to evolve, while ensuring an overall coherent look and feel well into the future. The flexibility within the designs support new recipes, seasonal releases and further expansion into different categories, with those already planned including red bitters and absinthe.
The new approach has also created efficiencies in production, with the label framework now accommodating small-batch requirements with ease – allowing the team to bottle new spirits without reinventing the design each time. As the farm store continues to grow in popularity and visibility, the spirits now sit together confidently as a family, united by a shared tone and sense of place.
This project marks a new stage of a long-term design partnership. We look forward to helping the Granor team continue to connect craft and agriculture, field and bottle, to build a product range deeply rooted in the character of the farm.
The flexibility within the designs support new recipes, seasonal releases and further expansion into different categories.
